Below you will find thumbnails of the 23 categories that Kinji Imanishi used to organize his Notebooks. Each box contains a brief description of the contents of the materials. At the end of each description the languages in which the materials are written is noted. The first mentioned language is the predominant language of each set of materials. The separate categories contain from 1-16 volumes of notebooks, or up to 21 separate maps. Drafts of papers and letters also contain several separate sets. To access these, click on the thumbnail to see the volumes in each category.

Africa , Europe , USA Trip 1958
In 1958 Imanishi and Itani Junichiro traveled to Africa, Europe and USA to meet with primate researchers and psychologists, and to identify potential great ape research fieldsites. These documents include lists of scientists and their affiliations, hotel receipts, trip costs and various notes on conversational English. These papers can be seen in conjunction with the diaries Imanishi kept of their trip, called the Africa Field Notebooks 1958.

Doctoral Thesis Draft 1937
Imanishi gakui ronbun. Soko, 1937. A 27-page draft of Imanishi's doctoral thesis “Mayflies from Japanese torrents.” Written in pencil with all of his corrections and editorial remarks in red pencil.

Drafts of nine papers spanning four decades that are preserved with Imanishi's re-writes and editorial changes clearly marked by him, providing a window into the development of his thought. Papers are on geobiology, animal society research, notes that he meant to discard after publication of his 1941 book Seibutsu no Sekai (World of Living Things), Japanese research on primates, origin of the human family and origin of personality, among others.

Kamogawa Research 1935

Four volumes of Imanishi's field notes for his research on mayfly larvae in the Kamo River in Kyoto . These volumes of the Saishu nikki (Collection Diary) have been transcribed by SAITO Kiyoaki and published as: Imanishi Kinji Firudo Noto. Saishu nikki Kamogawa 1935. December, 2002 by Kyoto daigaku gakujistu shuppankai, (ed.) Ishida Hidemi.

Karakoram Maps 1941-1943
Five maps published by the Gilgit Agency, N.W. Frontier Province and Jammu and Kashmir in Aghanistan in 1941-43, including Afghanistan, Jammu and Kashmir, the N.W. Frontier Province, Pakistan and U.S.S.R. Maps were photographed in halves and as composites to allow closer inspection.

Seven handwritten letters from various times, including 1958, 1964, 1968 and 1969. The 1958 letters are of particular interest for the history of primatology as Imanishi was making his first contact with western researchers regarding work in Africa . Other letters are contained in the Paris Colloquium 1970 series.

Maps of Africa
21 Maps
Twenty-one maps of various countries and cities in Africa and of New York City used during Imanishi and Itani's 1958 trip to Africa, Europe and the USA. There are many notations of names of people and hotels, tribal chiefs, government officers, ecological and animal sightings, payments, etc. made on the margins and backs of the maps. Larger maps appear as quadrants as well as composites (whole maps) to allow closer reading. Front and back of maps were recorded.

 Paris Colloquium 1970

Collection of conference photographs, papers and letters to foreign scientists who attended a conference on ‘Les Modèles Animaux du Comportement Humain' held at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique on 10th December, 1970. Imanishi presented a paper there titled ‘The early conditioning of hierarchy in monkeys'.

 Toimisaki no uma (Toimisaki horses), 1948 (Spring)
By far the largest collection of diaries and field notes in the archive (approx. 2300 pages), the Toimisaki series includes 17 field diaries and hundreds of pages of field notes on studies of the semi-wild horses in Kyushu. It is a prime sample of pioneering ethological research.
The Spring 1948 series includes four Field Notebooks (#1-4), field notes and a published article on the preliminary survey of the horses.
