How to Search the Archive

Click on the thumbnail in a box. This brings up another thumbnail of the first page of the set of materials.

Click on this thumbnail to bring up thumbnails of every page of that particular work.

Click on each individual image and follow directions provided to view and manipulate the size of the text for easy reading on your screen.

While in a particular page, click on ‘Information about this Image’. A box will appear that provides the information contained in the database regarding that image. The information is contained under a series of metatags that can be used in more specific searches using the Search the Archive function.

For example, if you first click on the Academic Alpine Club box on the Explore the Archive page, then click again on the thumbnail of the first page, then click again on the thumbnail, a readable text appears. If you then click on ‘Information about this image’, the following information about the page is provided.

  • The first letters of the Identifier (AACK) refer to the work – Academic Alpine Club Kyoto. The numbers following the letters refer to the number of the image. This is a useful number to record if you think you would like to revisit a particular page in future. By entering the Identifier (under Unique Identifier in the Search) you will be taken immediately to the specific page.
  • The Page Title is the title of the image. This does not always correspond to the actual page of the work.
  • The Book Title corresponds to the Volume Title in the Search
  • The Date Created is when Imanishi wrote the work. This is the year you would enter in the Search.
  • The Date Recreated is when the digital image was taken for the archive.
  • The Collection refers to the name of the Archive as a whole and is the same for every image
  • The Series corresponds to the Categories on the Explore the Archive Page.

To make a specific search, you have the following choices:

Search by Volume Title: This corresponds to the Book Title on the information box. It also corresponds to the xls title

Search by Unique Identifier: AACK for the complete set of papers under this category, or AACK0001 for the first page only.

Search by Year Created: The year that Imanishi wrote the work.

Search All Fields: You can use any term that appears in the database, including the Series, Book (Volume) title, etc. Partial titles are sufficient. The Search is not case sensitive.

Use of the MS Excel database

On every search page there is the opportunity to link to the MS Excel database. This provides the unique identifiers and the volume titles of each individual work in the collection.   This is most useful if you wish to search by volume title for a particular work.

The excel database also provides the number of images taken for each work. This number is usually less than the actual number of pages in the works, as two pages usually appear in one image in the case of notebooks. However, it gives an idea of the size of each volume.
